In this article you will read why I like and would recommend the book It Starts with the Egg by Rebecca Fett, and how it can be helpful to you.

About the author
The author, Rebecca Fett, is professionally a scientist. She studied molecular biology and biochemistry. In addition, she worked in researching and analyzing scientific evidence. Rebecca Fett took this knowledge and experience and transferred it to writing about the scientific research that supports fertility treatment.
What is the book about
Rebecca Fett analyzes a large amount of scientific research to come up with clinically proven answers to explain infertility, and then what can be done to improve egg quality and sperm quality, to support a pregnancy. The book covers improving egg quality and sperm quality for better chances to conceive naturally, to conceive via in-vitro fertilization (IVF) – including embryo making and embryo transfer. The book also supports information for better chances to prevent miscarriages and have a live birth, through a healthy egg and sperm.
The book goes into details about supplements that work through analyzing clinical studies, as well as the impact of environmental toxins on fertility.
What I like about the book
- that it is based on a lot of scientific data
- that the book is easy to read and follow (a great balance between scientific terms and layman’s terms)
- that the information is presented in a chronological order, and divided into easy to digest sections
- that sperm quality is included too
- that it covers different methods of achieving a pregnancy (not just natural, but also IVF, embryo transfer)
- that the changes that are proposed are simple (not too overwhelming and not too much to change that you won’t even know where to start)
- that there are complete plans of supplements (again based on scientific evidence) for different parts of the fertility journey – so a plan if trying to conceive naturally, a separate plan for embryo transfer (since each part requires different ‘treatment’)
- that it also includes some lifestyle changes (so not just the supplements), such as eating a healthy Mediterranean diet and removing environmental toxins (again these are scientifically based)
- that it includes references to all the scientific articles
How did I use this book
In my case I was interested in the embryo transfer part. While I read all the book, and implemented small changes to my lifestyle, including eating more Mediterranean foods and removing/switching some environmental toxins (such as buying vegan nail polish, eco friendly detergent, a water filter, switching to glass containers), my focus was more on the embryo transfer part.
I followed the supplementary plan for an embryo transfer. My embryo transfer was successful. My lining was nice and thick. I held on to the pregnancy past 3 months, and eventually gave birth to our son. To note that I was also taking other medication prescribed by my fertility doctor during this time. And also, our embryo was adopted, so we did not use my eggs. I cannot guarantee that my embryo transfer and live birth was successful because of the supplements recommended in this book, but I felt confident to add the supplements and some lifestyle changes, since the information presented in this book is backed by scientific research.
How can this book be useful to you
If you are dealing with infertility, it might feel to you that this is yet another book out there that tries to explain your infertility and promise that ‘magic’ formula. Like you, I read a million books and articles, and tried various potions, positions, exercise, treatment, and keep getting disappointed and discouraged when it fails, as it feels that I have failed. I like this book because it is based on scientific studies, although there is still a percentage of people in the studies for whom it did not work. However, I felt that it was worth a try. I hope that it brings you what you are looking for!
How can I get access to the book
Feel free to purchase the book It Starts with the Egg from Amazon, by clicking on the link here.
Otherwise I am sure that a lot of local bookstores carry it.
On the same note, the author Rebecca Fett has another book out, which seems to go hand in hand with It Starts with the Egg. It is the cookbook It Starts with the Egg Fertility Cookbook, which has 100 Mediterranean inspired recipes. Feel free to check it out here.
